About the position

We are seeking a full-time Data Engineer Intern in our Olathe, KS location. In this role, you will be responsible for performing aspects of data engineering for our IT department and learning to maintain and enhance Big Data Ecosystems at Garmin. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of data engineering while working alongside experienced professionals in a collaborative environment. As a Data Engineer Intern, you will understand foundational concepts of data development and operational procedures. You will also gain insights into production and operations issues as they relate to engineering. Working with the team, you will develop scalable and extensible solution architectures that leverage contemporary big-data technologies within an evolving operational framework. Your participation will span the design, code, test, maintenance, enhancement, and decommission phases throughout the software life cycle, allowing you to contribute your technical expertise and identify issues effectively. Additionally, you will assist the team in developing reliable solutions to complex problems that require regular use of ingenuity and creativity. This role is designed to help you grow your skills and knowledge in data engineering while contributing to meaningful projects that impact Garmin's IT operations.

Responsibilities

  • Understand foundational concepts of data development and operational procedures
  • Understand production/operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Work with team to develop scalable, extensible solution architectures leveraging contemporary big-data technologies in an evolving operational framework
  • Participate in design, code, test, maintenance, enhance and decommission phases throughout software life cycle to contribute technical expertise and to identify issues
  • Assist team to develop reliable solutions to complex problems which require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity

Requirements

  • Completed coursework in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or related field
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
  • Must possess relevant experience and/or training in languages such as SQL, Python or R

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
