About the position

As a Data Engineer Intern at Garmin, you will be immersed in the world of data engineering within our IT department, specifically located in Olathe, KS. This full-time internship is designed to provide you with hands-on experience in maintaining and enhancing Big Data Ecosystems. You will have the opportunity to learn foundational concepts of data development and operational procedures, which are crucial for understanding the complexities of data engineering in a real-world environment. In this role, you will work closely with a team to develop scalable and extensible solution architectures that leverage contemporary big-data technologies. You will participate in various phases of the software life cycle, including design, coding, testing, maintenance, enhancement, and decommissioning. Your contributions will be vital in identifying issues and providing technical expertise throughout these phases. Moreover, you will assist the team in developing reliable solutions to complex problems that require ingenuity and creativity. This internship is not just about learning; it is about actively contributing to the team's success and gaining valuable insights into the data engineering field.

Responsibilities

  • Understand foundational concepts of data development and operational procedures
  • Understand production/operations issues as they relate to engineering
  • Work with team to develop scalable, extensible solution architectures leveraging contemporary big-data technologies
  • Participate in design, code, test, maintenance, enhance and decommission phases throughout software life cycle
  • Contribute technical expertise and identify issues during software life cycle phases
  • Assist team to develop reliable solutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity

Requirements

  • Completed coursework in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Business or related field
  • Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0)
  • Relevant experience and/or training in languages such as SQL, Python or R

Nice-to-haves

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
  • Previous experience working in a team environment
