The Data Research Engineer position at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) of Penn State University involves providing advanced visualization and decision support software solutions. The position requires collaboration with engineers, faculty, and students to address data-related challenges and contribute to the development of data engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Assemble large, complex sets of data that meet research requirements.
• Build required infrastructure for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from various data sources using cloud and SQL technologies.
• Integrate analytical tools to utilize the data pipeline, solving research problems posed by stakeholders and the data science team.
• Work with a team of engineers, faculty, students, and customers to assist them with data-related technical and resource issues.
• Execute tasking within an Agile development process.
• Keep current with relevant emerging technologies and trends by attending conferences and workshops relevant to department and project goals.
• Coordinate Data Engineering related research and development activities between disciplines involving exploration of subject area, definition of scope, and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches.
• Mentor and train employees in the development of Data Engineering related technical, project, and business development skills.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus 5 years related experience for the advanced professional level.
• PostgreSQL experience.
• Python programming skills.
• FastAPI knowledge.
• Security+ or similar level of certification.

Nice-to-haves

• Data flow automation using NiFi.
• PostGIS experience.
• Active TS/SCI clearance.
