About the position

The Faculty Assistant position at the University of Maryland, College Park, is a critical role within the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (CATT) Laboratory, which is recognized as a leader in transportation information analysis, visualization, and user interface design. The CATT Laboratory is dedicated to providing innovative analytics products and an integrated suite of situational awareness tools that significantly enhance the operational capabilities of transportation practitioners. With a vast repository of transportation data, the laboratory processes hundreds of gigabytes of data daily, making it one of the largest collections of traffic data globally. The insights generated from this data not only save taxpayer money but also contribute to environmental sustainability and public safety. In this role, you will be part of a passionate team that is committed to building high-quality software solutions for analyzing large datasets. The position involves designing, developing, and supporting over 40 relational database instances, as well as distributed systems using technologies such as Cassandra and Hadoop. You will leverage your expertise to create stable, secure, and reliable data platforms that support custom data analytics applications. The work environment is flexible, allowing for both in-office and remote work options, and emphasizes collaboration among a diverse team of professionals, including application developers, analysts, UX designers, data scientists, and IT specialists, all operating within an Agile framework. As a Faculty Assistant, you will have the opportunity to continuously learn and apply new skills while staying current with industry best practices and emerging technologies. Your contributions will directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of transportation operations, making a meaningful difference in the community and beyond.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, deploy, and manage data storage and processing solutions.
  • Develop data models and schemas for new data sources for both relational and non-relational distributed platforms.
  • Write and maintain data pipelines to ingest large datasets from APIs and cloud storage to local storage instances.
  • Write data retrieval, statistical calculation, and geospatial analysis queries and stored procedures.
  • Assist with analysis and discovery of new datasets for integration into existing internal platforms.
  • Work with application developers to debug and tune queries for performance.
  • Estimate effort for work tasks and report on work progress to technical team lead.
  • Participate in our Tier II Support team rotation.

Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 3+ years experience with design, development, and administration of data platform solutions.
  • Experience writing ETL scripts and standalone applications in Python and/or Java.
  • Expertise writing and tuning SQL queries.
  • Experience deploying, configuring, maintaining, and upgrading production-level database servers and services.
  • Strong communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience administering PostgreSQL servers, performance tuning, streaming replication, and PgBouncer failover configuration.
  • Experience with non-relational data storage and processing solutions like Cassandra, Hadoop, Spark etc.
  • Experience working with geospatial datasets, using geospatial extensions (such as PostGIS) and querying features.
  • Experience with Linux (RHEL), including writing robust Bash scripts.
  • Experience architecting and implementing backup and recovery strategies.
  • Experience with Git, Jira, Confluence, and Bitbucket.
