About the position

The Data Engineer at Discover Financial Services is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining complex data solutions. This role emphasizes mentoring peers and ensuring timely delivery of data solutions with a focus on quality. The Data Engineer will also provide technical thought leadership within the tech lead community and manage risks and customer-impacting issues effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and troubleshoots data integration solutions with complex data transformations.
  • Provides guidance to other team members on data solutions.
  • Influences team members to achieve commitments as per guidance from Chapter Leads.
  • Contributes to agile ceremonies and demonstrates strong technical aptitude across data engineering practices.
  • Utilizes various tools to profile and secure data in transit and at rest, enforcing data governance controls and alerting.
  • Designs advanced SQL queries and leverages a metadata-driven framework for solutions.
  • Develops test scripts for unit and integration testing.
  • Leads code review sessions and process improvement initiatives.
  • Exhibits fluency with supplemental tools and technologies involved in data integration, such as Unix/Linux and BI stack.
  • Works on holistic solutions, driving feature and story delivery in an Agile environment.
  • Identifies and communicates upstream and downstream impacts for changes in the data pipeline.
  • Participates in the on-call rotation for support.
  • Demonstrates effective communication in team and cross-functional meetings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in Data Platform Administration / Engineering.
  • Technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale (internal applicants only).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data related to Financial and Marketing domains.
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT Tools (AbInitio, DataStage, Informatica).
  • Experience with Cloud Tools and Databases (AWS, Snowflake).
  • Knowledge of other programming languages (Unix scripting, Python, etc.).
  • Experience with CI/CD frameworks for data integration and Open Source technologies.
  • Experience working in cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Basic understanding of key infrastructure concepts to support business data needs.
  • Experience optimizing SQL for both relational and NoSQL databases.
