About the position

As a Data Engineer at College Board, you will play a crucial role in supporting the digital assessment lifecycle, from registration to score reporting. You will be part of the Interflow team, which consists of 12 highly collaborative and motivated technologists. This team is responsible for implementing core services that are leveraged by other teams at College Board. Your primary focus will be on understanding business use cases, extracting data using SQL, and building reports that enhance the digital test administration experience for students worldwide. The work you do will directly impact the quality of assessments delivered to millions of students, ensuring they have a smooth testing experience and that the organization can continuously improve its offerings. In this role, you will spend approximately 80% of your time extracting, analyzing, and reporting data. You will develop complex SQL scripts to extract data from various sources, including Athena, Timestream, and Redshift. You will also be responsible for tracing, analyzing, and remediating data issues, applying business logic to retrieve or modify data sets, and designing comprehensive reports on operational data. Additionally, you will automate data extraction processes using Python and visualize the results using tools like Tableau or QuickSight. You will follow best practices in coding, version control, and testing while exploring new AI and data engineering tools available in the market. The remaining 20% of your time will be dedicated to supporting peak test days, troubleshooting application access issues, and communicating effectively with both business and technical teams. You will document requirements, data mappings, and database specifications, ensuring that all aspects of the information analysis process are completed with high accuracy and quality. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the Digital Assessment and Bluebook teams, contributing to initiatives that are vital to the College Board's mission of connecting students to college success and opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Extract, analyze, and report data using SQL and AWS tools.
  • Develop complex SQL scripts to extract data from Athena, Timestream, and Redshift.
  • Trace, analyze, and remediate data issues or inconsistencies.
  • Apply business logic to retrieve or change data sets based on data structure understanding.
  • Design and manage information systems, conduct analysis, and generate reports on operational data.
  • Automate data extraction using Python and visualize data using Tableau/Quicksight.
  • Follow best practices around coding, version control, testing, and automated build processes.
  • Support peak time test days with insights into issues and resolutions needed for test administration.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application access issues and email communications.
  • Document requirements, data mappings, and database specifications.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience in a professional software development environment performing data engineering work.
  • High proficiency in writing SQL queries for complex data extracts.
  • Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, engineering, or an analytical field preferred.
  • Experience working with large sets of data.
  • Working knowledge of Python and experience with data visualization tools like Tableau or QuickSight preferred.
  • Experience with AWS or other Cloud Services (Athena, TimeStream, Redshift, QuickSight, S3, and/or DynamoDB) is desired.
  • Strong analytical thinking and structured problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to learn new technologies and continuously improve.
  • Excellent communication and practical decision-making skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments simultaneously.
