About the position

Vulcan Materials Company, the nation's largest producer of construction aggregates, is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join our team in either Birmingham, AL or Dallas, TX. This position is 100% onsite, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and direct engagement with our internal stakeholders and project managers. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of industry experience in the design, development, and implementation of cloud and hybrid data solutions that align with Vulcan's business needs. As a Data Engineer, you will play a crucial role in building and maintaining the next generation of our data platform, ensuring that it meets the evolving requirements of our business operations. In this role, you will be responsible for collecting business requirements and translating them into technical specifications to design and develop long-term data solutions. You will utilize a variety of technologies, including Python, AWS, Snowflake, and Airflow, to create and maintain data infrastructure and pipelines. Your work will involve designing enterprise data models, operationalizing complex data solutions, and ensuring the security and compliance of our data processing pipelines. Additionally, you will monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines and database performance issues, providing off-hours support as necessary. Continuous improvement is key, and you will be expected to research emerging data technologies and integration frameworks to enhance our data lake and warehouse practices.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to collect business requirements and translate them into technical requirements.
  • Utilize technologies such as Python, Lambda, Airflow, Snowflake, REST API, AWS, and S3 to develop data infrastructure and pipelines.
  • Design, create, and maintain conceptual, logical, and physical enterprise data models to support data needs.
  • Build and deploy data solutions that capture, explore, transform, and utilize data for Machine Learning and business intelligence.
  • Operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, and recommend data cleansing/quality solutions.
  • Assist with the estimation of development tasks, project planning, and risk identification.
  • Build and maintain secure and compliant production data processing pipelines.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines and database performance issues, providing off-hours support when necessary.
  • Research emerging data technology and integration frameworks to improve the data lake/warehouse platform.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3-5 years hands-on engineering experience in data modeling, data warehousing, and implementing data pipelines.
  • Experience with cloud-based data technologies such as Snowflake, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or Oracle.
  • Experience with Matillion or similar ETL tools.
  • Expertise in building data ingestion tools using Python to extract data from various sources.
  • Excellent programming skills in SQL, PL/SQL, Python, and shell scripting.
  • Experience in orchestration tools, such as Apache Airflow.
  • Good understanding of databases (Oracle, SQL Server) and ETL processes.
  • Experience in CI/CD release automation and deployment.
  • Exposure to streaming services like Kafka is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Intermediate leadership skills with a proven track record of self-motivation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with data governance and data quality frameworks.
  • Familiarity with machine learning concepts and tools.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools such as Tableau or Power BI.
