About the position

As a Data Engineer at the College Board, you will play a crucial role in the Interflow team, which consists of 12 dedicated technologists focused on enhancing the digital assessment experience for millions of students. This fully remote position allows for flexibility, with the option for hybrid work for those near College Board offices. Your primary responsibility will be to understand various business use cases, extract data using SQL, and build comprehensive reports that support digital test administration. You will collaborate closely with the Digital Assessment and Bluebook teams, ensuring that students worldwide have a seamless testing experience. Your insights will contribute to ongoing improvements in the testing process, aligning with the College Board's mission to connect students to college success and opportunity. In this role, you will spend approximately 80% of your time extracting, analyzing, and reporting data. This includes developing complex SQL scripts to extract data from platforms like Athena, Timestream, and Redshift, as well as troubleshooting data issues and applying business logic to manipulate data sets. You will also be responsible for designing and managing information systems, generating accurate reports, and automating data extraction processes using Python. Visualization of data through tools like Tableau or Quicksight will be essential to your role, as will following best practices in coding and version control. Additionally, you will support the team during peak testing periods, providing insights into issues and resolutions necessary for test administration. Your ability to communicate effectively with both business and technical teams will be vital in interpreting data and providing feedback on feature design and implementation. Finally, you will document requirements, data mappings, and database specifications to ensure clarity and accuracy in all data-related processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop complex SQL scripts to extract data in Athena, Timestream, and Redshift.
  • Access, trace, analyze, and remediate data issues or inconsistencies using SQL and AWS tools.
  • Apply business logic to retrieve or change data sets based on data structure understanding.
  • Trace changes in data and identify edge cases for data scenarios.
  • Design and manage information systems, conduct analysis, and generate reports on operational data.
  • Automate data extraction using Python and visualize data using Tableau/Quicksight.
  • Follow best practices around coding, version control, testing, and automated build processes.
  • Support peak time test days with insights into issues and resolutions needed for test administration.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve application access issues and application features.
  • Communicate data interpretations to both business and technical team members.
  • Document requirements, data mappings, and database specifications.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience in a professional software development environment performing data engineering work.
  • High proficiency in writing SQL queries for complex data extracts.
  • Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, engineering, or an analytical field is preferred.
  • Experience or exposure working with large sets of data.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with AWS tools such as Redshift and Athena.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools like Tableau or Quicksight.
  • Knowledge of AI and machine learning technologies.
