About the position

The Data Engineering Manager, Analytics position in Chicago, IL, is a pivotal role that combines technical expertise with leadership in the field of data engineering. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the development and management of data engineering projects, ensuring that the data infrastructure is robust, scalable, and aligned with the company's strategic goals. This role requires a deep understanding of data architecture, big data technologies, and the ability to lead a team of data engineers while collaborating closely with data science teams to drive data-driven decision-making across the organization. In this position, you will leverage your extensive experience in data engineering to architect and implement big data applications using the Hadoop ecosystem, including technologies such as HDFS, YARN, MapReduce, Spark, and Hive. You will also play a crucial role in mentoring and developing your team, fostering a culture of inclusion, ownership, and accountability. Your ability to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences will be essential in bridging the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, with at least 8 years of experience in data-related roles, including a minimum of 3 years in management. You will be expected to identify and nurture talent within your team, ensuring that they have the skills and support needed to succeed in a fast-paced and challenging environment. Additionally, familiarity with cloud technologies, particularly AWS, and experience with healthcare data will be advantageous in this role.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the development and management of data engineering projects.
  • Architect and implement big data applications using the Hadoop ecosystem.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical or business field.
  • 8+ years of experience working in Data, with at least 3+ years in management roles.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with programming languages such as Python, JAVA, and Shell/Bash scripting.
  • 5+ years of experience in architecting Big Data applications using the Hadoop ecosystem.
  • 3+ years of experience collaborating with data science teams on data preparation and modeling.
  • Strong communication skills to convey technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in creating a culture of inclusion and accountability.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical or business field.
  • Familiarity with AWS and cloud native data processing tools like Redshift, Presto, EMR, Glue, Athena, SageMaker.
  • Hands-on experience in Data Science with R or Python and familiarity with deep learning frameworks.
  • Experience working with healthcare data.
