About the position

The Data Engineering Manager at PayPal will lead the development of the new Developer Data Platform, focusing on enhancing developer productivity through data-driven insights. This role combines leadership of a talented team of data engineers and analysts with hands-on architectural responsibilities, aiming to create a platform that empowers engineers and managers to make informed decisions. The position requires a strategic leader with extensive experience in data architecture and engineering, particularly in environments that enhance developer workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead a high-performing data engineering team, providing mentorship and career development opportunities.
  • Define and execute the data engineering strategy for developer productivity platforms, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
  • Design and oversee the implementation of scalable data architectures for data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Collaborate with product managers, data scientists, and software engineers to identify data needs and deliver solutions.
  • Define the data ingestion, processing, and storage strategy for handling data from various developer tools.
  • Establish and enforce best practices for data governance, quality, and security.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and implement innovative data solutions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and implement key metrics for measuring developer productivity.
  • Design and develop reports and visualizations that provide actionable insights.
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and manage expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in data engineering, with a minimum of 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Proven track record in designing and implementing large-scale data systems, preferably in a developer tools context.
  • Experience using IBM UrbanCode Velocity or similar enterprise-scale release management applications.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Looker) and analytics frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of big data technologies (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Kafka) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with strong business acumen.
  • Demonstrated expertise in DORA, SPACE, and other developer productivity metrics.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
