About the position

The Data Engineering Manager at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center will oversee a team focused on developing and maintaining a robust translational data infrastructure and user-facing applications. This role is pivotal in ensuring the security, compliance, and efficiency of data systems that support cancer research and treatment. The manager will collaborate with various stakeholders to enhance data capabilities and lead a team dedicated to innovation and excellence in data engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Provide subject matter expertise and oversight for the translational data infrastructure.
  • Mentor and guide the engineering team, fostering professional development and a collaborative work environment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather input and prioritize development efforts for data infrastructure enhancements.
  • Define and manage the engineering roadmap in alignment with Fred Hutch's data strategy.
  • Ensure robust and scalable architecture and design of the data infrastructure.
  • Proactively identify and resolve technical issues that may impede organizational goals.
  • Communicate and resolve complex technical and/or process issues efficiently.

Requirements

  • BA/BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in supporting or developing data infrastructure and technology systems.
  • Significant experience with modern software development practices, including CI/CD and automated testing.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures and infrastructure as code.
  • Familiarity with data management tooling, preferably Databricks.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Expertise in programming languages and data transformation tools such as Python, SQL, and Apache Spark.
  • Experience in highly regulated data environments, ideally in healthcare or research.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with collaboration tools like Teams, Slack, Jira, and Confluence.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Interest in innovating within the healthcare and research data science and AI space.
