About the position

The Data Entry Clerk position at Marion County Building Safety involves performing specialized technical work related to contractors' licenses and building permits. This role emphasizes excellent customer service skills while assisting citizens and contractors with Florida building codes and permit requirements. The clerk will be responsible for reviewing and processing permit applications, collecting fees, and issuing permits, all while ensuring compliance with established codes and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide face-to-face, telephonic, and online customer assistance about permit requirements, processes, fees, and timelines.
  • Assist contractors and the general public in obtaining building permits and contractors' licenses, ensuring compliance with established codes and regulations.
  • Process applications and perform data entry for permits and licensing.
  • Notify customers about application deficiencies and corrective actions required.
  • Receive and review corrected documentation; update system records accordingly.
  • Calculate and review fees owed to ensure accuracy for all county-imposed charges; collect fees owed and issue receipts.
  • Perform daily audits for monies collected.
  • Assist in other areas of the department as directed by the supervisor or other lead staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in permit processing, contractor licensing, construction administration, or general clerical/customer service within the last five years.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver License.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with cashier functions and performing cash drawer audits.
  • Knowledge of Florida Statutes and local codes related to contractor licensing and permitting processes.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
