About the position

The Data Governance Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining data governance policies, data lineage, data cataloging, and data quality frameworks. This role is crucial in managing data assets across the organization, ensuring data integrity, and supporting data integration efforts to facilitate business intelligence and analytics initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement data governance policies to ensure the proper management of organizational data.
  • Define data governance standards and procedures to guarantee consistency and compliance across all data-related processes.
  • Oversee data quality and integrity, ensuring that data is accurate, reliable, and compliant with internal and external regulations.
  • Identify and resolve data quality issues, working closely with relevant teams to implement data quality improvement plans.
  • Monitor data usage to ensure adherence to data governance policies, and identify areas for improvement.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive data lineage maps that document the flow of data across systems and business processes.
  • Analyze data flows and dependencies to ensure that data is correctly tracked and transformed throughout its lifecycle.
  • Identify data sources and transformations, ensuring transparency and accountability in data management.
  • Manage and maintain the organization’s data catalog using tools like Alation, ensuring that metadata is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Enrich metadata with additional business context and usage information to improve the usability and accessibility of the catalog.
  • Ensure the completeness and accuracy of the data catalog, making sure it is a reliable resource for data discovery and analysis.
  • Conduct regular data profiling to assess the quality, consistency, and completeness of the organization’s data.
  • Identify data anomalies and inconsistencies by analyzing datasets and identifying areas for improvement.
  • Generate data profiling reports that highlight key findings and provide actionable insights to data teams for remediation.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and other stakeholders to ensure efficient and accurate data integration processes.
  • Identify and resolve data integration challenges, proposing solutions to streamline and improve data workflows.
  • Ensure seamless integration of data across platforms, ensuring consistency and quality.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of data governance principles and best practices.
  • Experience with data governance tools such as Alation for data cataloging and BigEye for data lineage management.
  • Proficiency in SQL for data analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with data quality tools and frameworks for ensuring data integrity.
  • Knowledge of data modeling and data warehousing concepts to support integration and quality efforts.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex data issues and optimize data processes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and business teams.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with large-scale data environments and integrating data from diverse sources.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and big data tools.
  • Experience with data privacy and compliance regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) is a plus.
