About the position

The Data Governance Specialist (also known as The Data Steward) is responsible for leading data governance initiatives, safeguarding data assets, and enabling data-driven decision-making within a structured and compliant environment. This role involves collaborating with various teams to develop governance frameworks that align with regulatory standards and business goals, ensuring data is handled responsibly, accurately, and consistently across the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement data governance policies, frameworks, and standards to ensure data quality, consistency, and security.
  • Establish data quality standards and metrics, monitoring and reporting on data quality issues and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA by developing and enforcing relevant policies.
  • Facilitate data access and stewardship by collaborating with data custodians and business users, promoting a culture of data stewardship, and training staff on best practices.
  • Manage data catalogs and metadata repositories to provide transparency into data sources, definitions, and lineage.
  • Identify and address data governance issues, resolving disputes, access concerns, or quality issues, and implementing solutions to improve data reliability.
  • Support data governance tools and technology by evaluating and implementing tools that align with governance goals.

Requirements

  • In-depth knowledge of data governance principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess data quality and governance issues.
  • Familiarity with data governance tools such as Collibra, Alation, Informatica, or Talend.
  • Proficiency in privacy and security regulations including GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills to work with cross-functional teams.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certifications in data governance, data management, or compliance (e.g., CDMP, CIPP).
  • Experience with data governance implementation in cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP).
  • Familiarity with metadata management and data cataloging practices.
