About the position

As a Data Journalist at Jerry, you will play a crucial role in positioning the company as a leader in data insights within the personal finance and automotive industries. Reporting directly to the VP of Communications, your primary focus will be on crafting compelling, data-driven stories that attract media attention and drive coverage on key topics. You will work closely with various teams to enhance Jerry's reputation and engagement with customers, partners, and investors.

Responsibilities

  • Wrangle data from internal and external sources, analyze data, create data visualizations, and write and publish relevant stories.
  • Conduct data research and analysis to identify topics for consumer consumption.
  • Bring newsroom-based data journalism experience and expertise to the team.
  • Identify topics and opportunities based on analysis of data that are relevant to news media and consumers.
  • Conceptualize, outline, and draft newsworthy articles or studies on a broad spectrum of topics including automotive, driving, insurance, and personal finance.
  • Partner with editorial/video content, growth marketing, data, product, partnerships, and SEO teams to identify data journalism opportunities.
  • Act as spokesperson for media opportunities about the stories you write secured by the communications team.
  • Train supporting talent to identify angles, data sources, and trends and enhance writing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience in a real-time news service or online publication that covers finance, auto and/or the economy.
  • Passion for topics in automotive and/or personal finance such as car buying/selling, credit scores, driving habits or insurance and loans.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with data analysis and spotting newsworthy trends through data.
  • Proficiency with Excel, Python, and R or SQL.
  • Proficiency with Flourish or similar chart creation program, and at least one generative AI platform (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot).
