The attorney will be responsible for developing policies, advising clients on compliance strategies, and representing them in regulatory inquiries and litigations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal advice on data protection laws and best practices, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and international data privacy regulations.
  • Develop and implement company policies related to data privacy, security, and information governance.
  • Monitor and assess changes in privacy laws, advising clients on compliance strategies for new or updated regulations.
  • Assist in preparing incident response plans and providing guidance during data breach investigations.
  • Support clients in managing cybersecurity incidents, including regulatory reporting, public relations, and interaction with law enforcement.
  • Lead the development of strategies to prevent data breaches and protect client interests in the event of a security incident.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate privacy and data security provisions in contracts with vendors, service providers, and partners.
  • Ensure that data handling agreements comply with applicable laws, such as GDPR data processing agreements (DPAs) and similar standards.
  • Develop and deliver training programs for internal teams on data protection requirements, company policies, and risk mitigation techniques.
  • Ensure that employees understand their responsibilities related to handling and protecting personal and sensitive data.
  • Represent clients in regulatory inquiries, enforcement actions, and litigations related to data privacy and cybersecurity.
  • Engage with regulatory bodies and maintain relationships to stay informed about compliance expectations and enforcement trends.
  • Conduct privacy impact assessments and data protection audits to identify and mitigate legal risks.
  • Collaborate with information security teams to develop and implement security protocols and safeguard systems.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with the state bar.
  • Active Iowa license or ability to review Iowa license.
  • 6+ years of experience in data privacy and protection law, with significant experience advising clients on privacy compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of data protection laws and regulations (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, etc.).
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to address complex legal issues related to data privacy and security.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and drafting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Prior experience in a corporate, law firm, or in-house legal department is preferred.
