About the position

The Data Science Summer Internship at Allianz Life offers students the opportunity to engage in meaningful projects that address real-world business challenges using advanced data science techniques. Interns will collaborate with business stakeholders and technical teams to develop machine learning models, perform statistical analyses, and present findings to leadership, all while gaining valuable experience in a supportive and inclusive environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build appropriate data science solutions and/or statistical analyses that will address important business needs
  • Query and prepare relevant data for models and analysis, including performing exploratory data analysis and handling outliers
  • Work closely with business stakeholders and data scientists to understand business problems and develop appropriate solutions, including iterating through proof-of-concept solutions
  • Implement high quality code and participate in regular code reviews with data scientists
  • Balance working independently and collaborating with other team members on a variety of projects
  • Identify new opportunities for analytical solutions
  • Present results and recommendations to department and senior leadership

Requirements

  • Working toward a graduate degree in statistics, data science, math, computer science or a related quantitative field
  • Proficiency working with dataframes in Python and/or R
  • Solid understanding of basic statistical concepts (e.g. hypothesis testing) and machine learning techniques
  • Experience working with databases, including relational databases using SQL
  • Ability to summarize, explore, visualize, and manipulate large data sets
  • Ability to deal with the ambiguity of early-stage scoping and evaluation of new opportunities and the flexibility to change direction as additional information becomes available
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Curiosity to learn, including an interest in learning about the life insurance and annuities industry
