About the position

The Data Scientist II at Carpenter Technology Corporation plays a crucial role in advancing the company's digital transformation by training, validating, and managing machine learning solutions. This position involves mining and analyzing complex data sets to support data-driven decision-making, conducting research and modeling on organizational data, and developing algorithms to improve operations and address production quality issues across various business lines.

Responsibilities

  • Apply data science techniques to massive structured/unstructured data sets to discover patterns and solve business problems.
  • Build statistical and machine learning models for detecting root causes in process and yield variability.
  • Develop prescriptions with actionable recipes for critical process variables from model parameters.
  • Design and conduct experiments for observational data to identify factors associated with cost of poor quality and process variability.
  • Build process simulation models to identify optimal critical process paths using simulation techniques.
  • Develop anomaly detection models to identify anomalous behavior in critical process inputs.
  • Manage the machine learning model life cycle through documentation, version control, and performance metrics.
  • Communicate model findings clearly with stakeholders including market leads and senior business leaders.
  • Drive the collection, cleansing, processing, and analysis of new and existing data sources.
  • Report findings through appropriate outputs and visualizations tailored for intended audiences.
  • Stay current on analytics developments in various business and analytics domains.
  • Generate innovative ideas and shape the information strategy in support of technical projects and new product developments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on accelerated projects to scale data architecture and execute data science solutions.

Requirements

  • Four-year degree required; Master's degree or PhD preferred in computer science, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or related field.
  • 3-6 years of experience in data science, analytics, and model building roles.
  • Proficiency in programming in Python, R, Julia, MATLAB, and SAS.
  • Knowledge of other programming languages and analysis tools (e.g. Scala, Java, Ruby, JavaScript, shell scripting).
  • Strong familiarity with big data frameworks and tools (e.g. Hadoop, Spark, MapReduce, Hive, Pig, Luigi/Airflow, Kafka, Data streaming, NoSQL, SQL).
  • Familiarity with cloud-based solutions (e.g. Azure, AWS EMR).
  • Experience in consuming REST based API with JSON payload preferred.
  • Practical knowledge of analytical techniques and methodologies (e.g. machine learning, segmentation, data mining, optimization techniques).
  • Understanding of data profiling and data cleansing techniques.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including with senior business leaders.
