About the position

The International Data Science team at Global Tech is dedicated to leveraging cutting-edge research in machine learning, statistics, and optimization to address various business challenges across assortment, pricing, sourcing, customer engagement, supply chain, and replenishment for multiple countries within the company's global operations. Our team is responsible for mining vast amounts of data, distilling actionable insights, extracting valuable information, and building sophisticated analytical models. We deploy machine learning algorithms and utilize the latest technologies to empower informed business decision-making. Collaborating closely with engineers, we construct reference architectures and machine learning pipelines within a big data ecosystem to productize our solutions. The advanced analytical algorithms developed by our team are instrumental in optimizing business operations and practices, ultimately transforming the shopping experience for our customers. Our data science community actively participates in numerous hack events, harnessing the petabytes of data at our disposal to innovate and create groundbreaking ideas. The work we accomplish at Labs is designed to enhance our operations and support our associates, contributing to our mission of helping customers save money to live better. The team collaborates with the International division, which operates over 5,900 retail units across 26 countries under 55 different banners, including regions such as Africa, Argentina, Canada, Central America, Chile, China, India, Japan, and Mexico. This role is pivotal in driving data-derived insights across various retail divisions by developing advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms tailored to specific business initiatives. The position requires a strong analytical mindset to assess data validity, synthesize large datasets, and identify trends and patterns that inform strategic decisions. Additionally, the role involves building and training statistical models for future replication, communicating insights to business partners, and influencing future plans based on data-driven recommendations. The ideal candidate will possess a product mindset, enabling them to build, scale, and deploy comprehensive data science products following successful prototyping, while also demonstrating an agile approach to problem-solving and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Drive data-derived insights across various retail divisions by developing advanced statistical models and machine learning algorithms based on business initiatives.
  • Direct the gathering of data, assessing data validity, and synthesizing data into large analytics datasets to support project goals.
  • Utilize big data analytics and advanced data science techniques to identify trends, patterns, and discrepancies in data, determining additional data needed to support insights.
  • Build and train statistical models and machine learning algorithms for replication in future projects.
  • Communicate recommendations to business partners and influence future plans based on insights.
  • Solve complex problems pivotal to the business and drive actionable insights from petabytes of data.
  • Utilize a product mindset to build, scale, and deploy holistic data science products after successful prototyping.
  • Demonstrate an incremental solution approach with agile and flexible ability to overcome practical problems.
  • Lead an analytic solution module or work as part of a larger team in data science projects.
  • Partner with senior team members to assess customer needs and define business questions.
  • Clearly articulate and present recommendations to business partners, influencing future plans based on insights.
  • Work with a customer-centric mindset to deliver high-quality, business-driven analytic solutions.
  • Drive innovation in approach, methods, practices, processes, outcomes, delivery, or any component of end-to-end problem solving.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 5 years of relevant experience or a Master's degree with 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in analyzing complex problems and translating them into data science algorithms.
  • Experience in machine learning, including supervised and unsupervised techniques such as forecasting, classification, data/text mining, NLP, decision trees, adaptive decision algorithms, random forests, search algorithms, neural networks, and deep learning algorithms.
  • Experience in statistical learning, including predictive and prescriptive analytics, web analytics, parametric and non-parametric models, regression, time series, dynamic/causal models, statistical learning, guided decisions, and topic modeling.
  • Strong experience in Python and PySpark.
  • Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform, Vertex AI, Kubeflow, and model deployment.
  • Strong experience with big data platforms such as Hadoop (Hive, Map Reduce, Scala).
  • Experience with BigQuery, SQL, relational databases, and data warehousing.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, Looker, etc.
  • Domain knowledge in retail, preferably in catalog management and merchandising.
  • Published papers or given talks in leading academic and research journals.
  • Experience with GPU/CUDA for computational efficiency.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Econometrics.
  • Successful completion of assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Experience with open-source frameworks such as scikit-learn, TensorFlow, or PyTorch.
  • Knowledge of creating inclusive digital experiences and implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards.
