About the position

The Video Engineering Data Analytics and Quality (DAQ) group at Apple is seeking an experienced Data Scientist with a strong background in computer vision and machine learning. This role is pivotal in evaluating machine learning models, developing performance metrics, and conducting thorough failure analysis. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of machine learning algorithms, data processing, and model optimization techniques, which are essential for ensuring that the models meet performance standards and are effectively integrated into production environments. In this position, you will be responsible for analyzing and validating machine learning and computer vision models to ensure they meet established performance standards. You will design and implement metrics to measure the effectiveness and accuracy of these models, and perform detailed failure analysis to understand model weaknesses and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, you will preprocess and clean large datasets to prepare them for modeling, and optimize models for performance and scalability by applying state-of-the-art techniques. Collaboration is key in this role, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, product managers, and other data scientists, to integrate models into production. Documentation of processes, model performance, and analysis results will also be a critical part of your responsibilities, ensuring that all findings and methodologies are clearly communicated and accessible to the team.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate machine learning and computer vision models to ensure they meet performance standards.
  • Design and implement metrics to measure the effectiveness and accuracy of models.
  • Perform detailed failure analysis to understand model weaknesses and identify areas for improvement.

  • Optimize models for performance and scalability, applying state-of-the-art techniques.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirement of a bachelor's degree.
  • Background in data science, machine learning, computer vision, and statistical data analysis.
  • Programming skills in data manipulation & processing (SQL & Python preferred).

Nice-to-haves

  • Demonstrated experience in in-depth analysis of machine learning model failures.
  • Experience crafting, conducting, analyzing, and interpreting experiments and investigations.
  • Proven expertise in data wrangling and developing data visualizations & reporting with tools such as Tableau, Superset, AWS, etc.
  • Detail-oriented to keep track of and understand the workings of complex algorithms.
  • Self-motivated and curious with creative and critical thinking capabilities to improve data quality evaluation methods for diverse and complex data annotation programs.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, along with strong collaborative abilities.
  • Familiar with machine learning interpretability methods.
