About the position
The Data Scientist/Ocean Engineer position at NOAA NCCOS involves working within an interdisciplinary research team to support marine spatial ecology initiatives. The role focuses on utilizing signal processing, automation, and machine learning techniques to analyze underwater imagery and enhance the efficiency of ecological data processing. The candidate will contribute to the development of scalable solutions for marine ecosystem management and conservation efforts.
Responsibilities
- Assist in marine mapping related projects by collaborating with principal investigators to understand project objectives and develop automation solutions.
- Work with other NCCOS data scientists to deploy automation and AI solutions on local machines or cloud environments.
- Implement and develop computer vision and machine learning algorithms for analyses, including model selection, validation, skill assessment, and ground-truthing.
- Lead and contribute to peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and technical memoranda.
- Provide analytic and technical guidance to team members.
- Travel to federal and state laboratories, academic institutions, and field missions as part of collaborative research projects.
Requirements
- Demonstrated expertise in signal processing and automation of data processing from remote or underwater sensors.
- Experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning for computer vision tasks.
- Proficiency in creating macros or scripts for data processing.
- Strong analytical skills and experience in ecological data analysis.
Nice-to-haves
- Familiarity with marine spatial ecology and habitat characterization.
- Experience with remote sensing platforms such as satellites, aerial drones, and autonomous underwater vehicles.
