About the position

The Data Scientist Principal for Population Health at Arizona State University (ASU) will play a pivotal role in the Health Observatory, focusing on collecting, analyzing, and visualizing health data to inform decision-making and advance health discoveries. This position involves leading technical data science projects, developing and implementing statistical models, and maintaining automated production pipelines to improve health outcomes for populations in Arizona and beyond.

Responsibilities

• Support or lead data science efforts in collaboration with Health Observatory leadership.
• Select and deploy advanced statistics and data science techniques to obtain actionable insights.
• Develop and maintain the complete end-to-end ML/AI cycle, including statistical analysis, feature engineering, model selection, and training.
• Create and maintain the data science infrastructure and pipeline using software and database tools.
• Responsible for continuous improvement of data science processes and technologies.
• Implement best machine learning operationalization (MLOps) practices.
• Provide strategic and thought leadership in data science initiatives.
• Mentor other staff members in data science and MLOps.
• Promote and represent the mission of the Health Observatory across ASU and with external stakeholders.

Requirements

• Master's degree in a related field and five years of relevant applied professional experience, or equivalent combination of experience and education.
• Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining machine learning models using cloud services (Google Cloud Platform, AWS, or Azure).
• Proficiency in Python programming and SQL.
• Experience developing machine learning/statistical models in public health or healthcare.

Nice-to-haves

• Evidence of a Doctoral degree in a relevant field.
