About the position

As a Data Scientist in the Customer Analytics team at American Airlines, you will play a crucial role in leveraging one of the world's largest data sets to create insights that drive impactful business decisions. The Customer Intelligence team is dedicated to supporting decision-making processes by extracting key insights, utilizing pattern recognition, and developing predictive analytics that translate into actionable business strategies. In this dynamic and engaging environment, you will face a variety of challenges and projects that will allow you to apply your interests and strengths. Your responsibilities will include delivering data and analytics-driven projects from inception to completion, applying advanced analytical techniques to address customer-centric questions, and collaborating with various teams to gather the necessary information for implementing advanced statistical methodologies. You will also be responsible for obtaining, manipulating, cleaning, and analyzing both structured and unstructured data from diverse sources. Your role will involve conducting exploratory analysis, including hypothesis testing and statistical inference, and partnering with business and technical stakeholders to translate complex retail business problems into innovative data science solutions. You will work closely with other commercial teams and IT to develop customer segmentations that align with strategic objectives, and integrate customer data for analytics purposes to enhance organizational knowledge. Additionally, you will deploy models as proofs of concept or fully productionized implementations, and help develop customer-centric metrics that provide a holistic view of customer attributes and behaviors. Presenting updates to key stakeholders, including senior leadership, will be a key part of your role, as will identifying opportunities to leverage new technologies and collaborate with external vendors to enhance customer understanding.

Responsibilities

  • Apply advanced analytical techniques to answer customer-centric questions relevant to the business.
  • Collaborate with other teams to gather the right information from various sources for implementing advanced statistical methodologies.
  • Obtain, manipulate, clean, and analyze structured and unstructured data from diverse sources.
  • Conduct exploratory analysis including hypothesis testing, statistical inference, and statistical analysis (predictive and/or prescriptive).
  • Partner with business and technical stakeholders to translate challenging retail business problems into data science solutions.
  • Work with other commercial teams and IT to develop and implement customer segmentations relevant to commercial strategic objectives.
  • Integrate and centralize customer data for analytics purposes to increase customer knowledge across the organization.
  • Deploy models as proofs of concept or fully productionized implementations.
  • Help develop and evaluate customer-centric metrics that incorporate customer attributes and behaviors.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to add customer insights leading to better decisions.
  • Select appropriate analytical tools and write code/queries to generate outputs supporting strategy and decision making.
  • Present updates to key stakeholders regarding customer-centric analytics and meaningful findings to the business.
  • Identify and assess opportunities to leverage new technologies and collaborate with external vendors.

Requirements

  • Masters/PhD degree or Bachelor's degree with 2+ years of equivalent practical experience in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Engineering, etc.).
  • Experienced with Machine Learning, Data Science, and AI-driven techniques.
  • Experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, Java).
  • Practical experience with data extraction, cleaning, and analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SQL and data visualization (e.g., Tableau).
  • Airline, aviation or transportation industry experience.
  • Experience with Cloud Computing and/or Distributed Computing (e.g. Databricks, Spark, AWS).
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure (storage accounts, service principal, Azure Data Factory and active directory).
  • Experience in quantitative marketing (correlation, clustering, segmentation, regression).
  • Experience with XGboost, KNN Neighbors, Random Forest.
