About the position

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) at Carnegie Mellon University is dedicated to advancing software engineering principles and practices, serving as a national resource in software engineering and computer security. The SEI collaborates closely with academia, defense and government organizations, and industry to enhance software-intensive systems. Our core mission is to assist organizations in improving their software engineering capabilities and in developing or acquiring high-quality software, delivered on time and within budget. In this role, you will leverage advanced statistics, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to address cyber security challenges faced by our government and industry clients. You will engage with customers to identify opportunities where advanced statistical techniques can be applied to solve complex problems, plan and develop prototype solutions, and ultimately build out final products. This position offers the unique opportunity to work alongside elite professionals and university faculty, contributing to the development of new technologies that will shape national cyber security strategies for years to come. As a Data Scientist - Technical Program Manager, you will be expected to travel to client sites, with travel requirements potentially reaching up to 50% of the time. This travel may vary significantly based on the nature of the work, particularly for classified projects that necessitate onsite presence. The SEI is committed to optimizing travel arrangements while considering the needs of our employees. Additionally, candidates must be able to pass a background check and obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance, potentially up to the TS level. It is important to note that applicants must be legally authorized to work for Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, as the university will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.

Responsibilities

  • Identify areas where advanced statistical techniques can help tackle problems for clients.
  • Plan and develop prototype solutions and build out final products.
  • Coordinate internal and external resources to execute projects and meet milestones and deadlines.
  • Ensure project deliverables are completed on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Assist in defining project scope and objectives, involving relevant stakeholders, and ensuring feasibility of the work.
  • Manage relationships with customers and stakeholders effectively.
  • Organize, create, and maintain comprehensive project documentation from project initialization to end of life.

Requirements

  • BS in data science, machine learning, computer science, statistics, or related highly-quantitative discipline with eight (8) years of experience; or MS with five (5) years; or PhD with two (2) years of experience.
  • Deep understanding of statistical modeling techniques and advanced data analytics.
  • Proficient with at least one mathematical/statistical programming package (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB).
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to coordinate resources to execute projects and meet deadlines.
  • Commitment to building and sustaining relationships with a diverse team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in predictive modeling, data science, and/or machine learning.
  • Experience in applying techniques for solution development in program management.
  • Ability to create and provide accurate, compelling briefs using various tools.
  • Experience in cybersecurity and privacy is a plus.
  • Experience supporting test and evaluation for large-scale government research programs is a plus.
