About the position

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a Data Scientist to join the Office of Data, Academic Planning & Institutional Research (DAPIR). This role is crucial for preparing data sets and applying data science techniques for advanced analytics, promoting the effective use of data across the institution. The Data Scientist will collaborate with various stakeholders to support research initiatives and decision-making processes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares data sets for analysis including cleaning/quality assurance, transformations, restructuring, and integration of multiple data sources
  • Independently identifies and implements appropriate data science techniques to find data patterns and answer research questions chosen by the lead researcher including data visualization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and data mining
  • Organizes and automates project steps for data preparation and analysis
  • Composes and assembles reproducible workflows and reports to clearly articulate patterns to researchers and/or administrators
  • Documents approaches to address research questions and contributes to the establishment of reproducible research methodologies and analysis workflows

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred)
  • Proficiency in programming languages (Python, R) and querying relational databases (SQL)
  • Experience creating and using advanced machine learning algorithms and statistics: regression, simulation, modeling, clustering, decision trees, predictive modeling, etc.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative and dynamic work environment

  • Experience across multiple functional areas of data, such as finance, HR, and student
