About the position

The Data Scientist position at the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) involves developing and maintaining datasets, providing technical expertise, and leading analytics initiatives to enhance human-centered design and improve organizational content, products, and services. This role is critical in supporting data management and customer experience within the agency.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain datasets.
  • Enter and verify unique datasets and integrate with databases.
  • Serve as a technical expert providing authoritative instruction and guidance to lower-level data scientists.
  • Lead the implementation of analytics on web and data use patterns to inform the organization on human-centered design and improvements.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Basic education requirement in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-2 or GS-09 level in the Federal service, including assisting with translating data into narratives and building predictive models.
  • For ZP-4 or GS-13 level, one year of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-3 or GS-12 level, including leading projects and applying advanced data science methodologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with web-based framework technology such as Astro, Hugo, Jekyll, and Content Management Systems (CMS).
  • Familiarity with JavaScript and PHP.
