About the position

The Data Storage Manager is an important position at George Blood LP, managing the efficient flow of audiovisual files, from ingest to delivery to deletion. This individual is responsible for daily tasks such as loading hard drives and verifying their contents, preparing hard drives or data tapes for delivery, managing near-line hard drive backup and data backup tapes, and overseeing the hard drive inventory. Our services include migration of obsolete data formats and this position may participate in those efforts. In this role, the Data Storage Manager will be tasked with creating new shipments and setting up hard drives for loading files, ensuring that hard drives have the required data before being sent out. The manager will utilize in-house tools to verify the integrity of the files, which constitutes about 70% of the job responsibilities. Additionally, troubleshooting file issues related to metadata, checksums, and file formats throughout the life cycle of files from drive loads to final shipment and deletion will take up approximately 10% of the role. The manager will also be responsible for managing the hard drive backup library and daily SAN LTO backups, which accounts for another 10%. Lastly, creating and reading documentation for daily activities, managing a collection of computers, and communicating technical issues with IT staff will also take up about 10% of the responsibilities.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems or similar experience
  • Experience in the Mac and PC environment
  • Understanding of file delivery workflows, hard drives, and cloud storage systems
  • Experience using databases to enter and locate information
  • A flexible and collaborative approach to working with others
  • Very organized with attention to detail
  • Being able to rapidly bounce between priorities

Nice-to-haves

  • Understanding of checksums, BagIt, and other digital preservation tools
  • Interest in audiovisual preservation and cultural heritage
  • Experience in audio or video production
  • Familiarity with FileMaker Pro, AppleScript, Python, and Bash
