About the position

The Data Visualization Intern at CSIS will play a crucial role in translating datasets into engaging graphs, charts, and other visual formats for the organization's publications. This position is designed for individuals passionate about data, design, and foreign policy, providing an opportunity to work in a creative environment alongside experienced designers and policy experts. The intern will enhance their skills while contributing to the mission of CSIS by effectively communicating complex information through visual storytelling.

Responsibilities

• Design data visualizations using Flourish and Datawrapper.
• Create infographics to support research findings.
• Assist researchers and analysts in communicating their data effectively.
• Collaborate with iDeas Lab designers to integrate visualizations into publication layouts.
• Gather feedback from clients and partners to improve products and tools.
• Support the design and layout of communication materials for print and digital platforms.

Requirements

• B.A./B.S./A.B. in a relevant field (information design, data visualization, computer science, graphic design) or equivalent experience.
• 1+ years of experience in data visualization design.
• Solid understanding of data visualization design best practices and general design principles.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud applications (Illustrator), HTML5, and CSS3/SASS.
• Experience in receiving and responding to feedback from clients.
• Strong interest in global affairs and public policy.

Nice-to-haves

• Familiarity with Flourish and Datawrapper.
• Experience with JS libraries and frameworks like React, Vue, Highcharts, D3, and jQuery.
• Knowledge of mapping tools like Mapbox, Leaflet, and Carto.
• Willingness to learn new technologies.

Benefits

• Hourly pay commensurate with experience ($17.50/hour for current undergraduates, $18.50/hour for bachelor's degree holders, and $19.50/hour for master's degree holders).
