About the position

The Global Business Services (GBS) team at Wolters Kluwer is responsible for overseeing and supporting the company's hosting services across multiple public and private clouds, data centers, and offices located in North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The Oracle DBA Manager role is a hybrid position that combines individual contributions with management responsibilities, with an expected ratio of 60% individual work and 40% management duties. The successful candidate will take ownership of managing database systems, ensuring they align with best practices to deliver optimal uptime and performance. This role involves collaborating with various lines of business to scale and grow database platforms, ensuring they provide the best price/performance ratio. Additionally, the DBA Manager will liaise with database software vendors and external technical support to address issues such as software upgrades and troubleshooting potential problems. In this position, the Oracle DBA Manager will be tasked with troubleshooting complex Oracle database issues promptly and accurately. They will maintain database disaster recovery procedures to guarantee continuous availability and rapid recovery. The role requires ensuring that databases are deployed according to GBS standards and business requirements, identifying and resolving performance and capacity-related issues, and ensuring that database management and maintenance tasks are executed effectively. Meeting ticket SLA expectations is crucial, as is staying updated with new database technologies and analyzing their applicability to the existing infrastructure. The candidate must possess a deep understanding of integrated security and be capable of participating in troubleshooting activities, as well as discussing database-related topics with both technical and business audiences. The DBA Manager will monitor and report on database storage utilization, write and understand code developed by others, and manage scheduled tasks, backup jobs, recovery processes, alerts, and database storage needs in accordance with firm change control procedures. They will perform fault diagnosis, troubleshoot, and correct problems at both the database and application performance levels. Collaboration is key, as the DBA Manager will work within the database administration team and with other Technical Service Group teams and departments at Wolters Kluwer. Regular reporting on the performance and stability of the database environment is expected, along with proactive identification of future needs to ensure reliable service. The role also involves documenting, developing, testing, and implementing updates to database systems, as well as a commitment to continuous learning and knowledge sharing. The candidate should be prepared to work outside of regular business hours as required for project or operational work.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot complex Oracle database issues in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Maintain database disaster recovery procedures to ensure continuous availability and speedy recovery.
  • Ensure databases are deployed according to GBS standards and business requirements.
  • Identify and resolve Oracle database issues related to performance and capacity.
  • Ensure database management and maintenance tasks are performed effectively.
  • Ensure ticket SLA expectations are met.
  • Stay updated with new database technologies and analyze such technologies to bring into scope of existing infrastructure.
  • Participate in troubleshooting activities with a deep understanding of integrated security.
  • Monitor and report on database storage utilization.

  • Monitor, tune, and manage scheduled tasks, backup jobs, recovery processes, alerts, and database storage needs in line with firm change control procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related experience.
  • 8 to 10 years of experience in Oracle Database Administration.
  • Experience with all aspects of setup, maintenance, troubleshooting, monitoring, and security of Oracle databases.
  • Experience with Upgrade/Migration of database platforms from On-Prem to cloud solutions is a plus.
  • Solid Database Administration skills in Oracle.
  • Experience with Oracle on Linux is preferred.
  • Experience with OEM monitoring and AWR is preferred.
  • Experience with performance troubleshooting is preferred.
  • Experience with Shell scripting is preferred.
  • Past experience supervising staff is preferred.
  • Experience mentoring and guiding other DBAs when there are improvement opportunities is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with building cloud model servers end to end is a plus.
  • Experience with Oracle Data Security, Backup & Recovery tools is a plus.
