About the position

The Database Administration Manager at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is a pivotal role responsible for leading a team of database administrators in managing and optimizing database systems, including Oracle, SQL Server, and DB2. This position focuses on transitioning the database environment to modern platforms, including cloud-based solutions like Snowflake and PostgreSQL, while ensuring high performance, availability, and robust disaster recovery plans. The manager will also mentor team members, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and manage vendor relationships to support business objectives and drive innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of database administrators on database technologies such as Oracle, SQL Server, and DB2, ensuring high performance and availability of database systems.
  • Oversee the design, installation, and maintenance of database systems to support business objectives and improve efficiency.
  • Ensure robust backup, recovery, and disaster recovery plans are in place and regularly tested.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand their data needs and provide solutions that drive business growth and innovation.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends and best practices in database management and incorporate them into the team's processes.
  • Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Manage vendor relationships and negotiate contracts to optimize costs and services.
  • Manage team cost center and ensure software and services spend are planned and remain within yearly budget targets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, Engineering, or Computer Science, or an additional 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of a Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years of experience within a database maintenance function or related professional experience.
  • One year of supervisory experience or demonstrated progressive leadership experience.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in transitioning database systems to modern platforms.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based database solutions.
