About the position

The intermediate MSSQL Database Administrator position is a full-time role that operates on the third shift, specifically from 11:30 PM to 8:00 AM EST, Monday through Friday. This role is part of the Government CIO and the VA's Network Operations Center (NOC), specifically within the Remote Access and Solutions Integration (RASI) Team. While the position is primarily remote, candidates must be prepared to travel occasionally to the VA's Network Operations Center located in Martinsburg, WV. In this role, the Database Administrator will be responsible for a variety of tasks related to the installation, configuration, hardening, patching, upgrading, and administration of MSSQL instances, specifically versions 2016, 2019, and 2022. The position requires a strong focus on performance monitoring and tuning, troubleshooting, capacity planning, and ensuring robust database backup and recovery processes. Additionally, the administrator will be tasked with query optimization and tuning to enhance database performance. The role also involves configuring and maintaining SQL Agent jobs and SSIS packages, as well as managing SQL logins, database users, and their associated permissions. The administrator will create and modify stored procedures, triggers, and policies, and will be expected to prepare PowerShell scripts to automate SQL administration tasks. Security is a critical aspect of this position, as the administrator will need to harden SQL instances according to DISA/FISMA/Government Best Practices Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and implement Transparent Data Encryption and Secure Socket Layer Encryption within MSSQL. Furthermore, the administrator will be responsible for creating and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and system documentation. A willingness to provide 24x7 on-call support one week out of every five weeks is also required.

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, harden, patch, upgrade, and administer development, user acceptance, and production MSSQL 2016/2019/2022 SQL instances.
  • Performance monitoring and tuning, troubleshooting, capacity planning, database backup and recovery, and query optimization/tuning.
  • Configure and maintain SQL Agent jobs and SSIS packages.
  • Create/maintain SQL logins, database users, and associated permissions.
  • Create and modify stored procedures, triggers, and policies.
  • Prepare Power Shell scripts to automate SQL administration tasks.
  • Harden SQL instances per DISA/FISMA/Government Best Practices Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
  • Implement Transparent Data Encryption and Secure Socket Layer Encryption within MSSQL.
  • Create/Update SOPs and system documentation.
  • Provide 24x7 on-call support one week out of every five weeks.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with 0 - 2 years of experience or commensurate experience.
  • Experience installing, configuring, hardening, patching, upgrading, and administering MSSQL 2016/2019/2022 SQL instances.
  • Experience with MSSQL backup and recovery, troubleshooting, performance monitoring/tuning, and administration.
  • Experience writing and optimizing TSQL.
  • Experience configuring Transparent Data Encryption within MSSQL.
  • Experience with the installation, configuration, and administration of MSSQL Reporting Services.
  • Experience creating, deploying, and debugging Integration Services packages.
  • Experience hardening MSSQL, specifically interpreting and implementing DISA/FISMA/Government Best Practices Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs).
  • Possess good communication and writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Motivated, self-starter with a high degree of attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Database administration experience with SQL 2019 and 2022.
