About the position

The Database Administrator I position is responsible for assisting with the maintenance and control of multiple integrated databases within a distributed, multi-tasking, wide area network system. This role involves ensuring database integrity, accessibility, and security while optimizing system performance and resources. The position requires collaboration with project teams to coordinate database development and provide support to users and technical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and control database systems and activities, including testing programs or databases to correct errors and making necessary modifications.
  • Work as part of a project team to coordinate database development and determine project scope and limitations.
  • Follow approved procedures for making changes to databases.
  • Assist with database design and operation, documenting standards regarding common data field structures and creating cross-references for integrated databases.
  • Prepare database descriptions and specify database identifiers.
  • Provide instruction to users and technical staff on the use of query and decision support tools.
  • Maintain database system integrity, accessibility, general security, and access privileges.
  • Assist with the verification of data accuracy, data conversion specifications, software installation, upgrades, and maintenance.
  • Develop, set up, and initiate data recovery systems.
  • Optimize system response and resources by tuning applications, database queries, system hardware, and operating systems.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher in Computer Information Systems, Microcomputer Technology, or a related field, or an Associate's degree in the same fields with two years of database programming experience with ORACLE or SQL relational databases and network software support experience.
  • A Texas Class 'C' Driver's License or equivalent issued by another state by the time of appointment.
  • Ability to work beyond standard workday or workweek hours as necessary.
  • Pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check within the first six months from hire.
