About the position

The Database Administrator II position at Capital Staffing Solutions is a hybrid role focused on managing, monitoring, installing, configuring, and securing the company's databases, with a primary emphasis on Db2 LUW (Linux, Unix, Windows). This role is critical in ensuring the availability and performance of database systems, requiring a solid understanding of SQL and query tuning. The Database Administrator will collaborate closely with development and business teams for code reviews and deployments, ensuring that database changes align with business needs and technical standards. In this role, the Database Administrator will work through a ticket queue to address problem tickets, implementing code changes as necessary. They will monitor databases, review logs, and ensure replication is functioning correctly, identifying opportunities to automate routine tasks. Regular audits of database security, configurations, and capacity will be part of the responsibilities to maintain system availability. The position also involves documenting processes, best practices, and standards for the team, as well as assisting with SQL tuning and performance optimization. The Database Administrator will be expected to deepen their scripting and database knowledge through training resources and collaboration with other DBAs. This role is essential for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the company's database systems, contributing to the overall success of the IT department and the organization as a whole.

Responsibilities

  • Works through the ticket queue to address problem tickets, review and implement code changes
  • Monitors databases, reviews database logs, reviews job logs and ensures replication is working to ensure that systems are maintained as well as identifies opportunities to automate routine tasks
  • Routinely audits database security, configurations and capacity to ensure systems availability
  • Documents processes, best practices, Standards and Procedures for the team
  • Assists with SQL tuning and review database logs for performance tuning opportunities
  • Implements schema changes based on database designs and theories
  • Deepens scripting and database knowledge by using training resources and other DBAs

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field or 4 years additional relevant work experience
  • 3-6 years of supervisory experience
  • Ability to read, write and understand SQL
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and ability to troubleshoot complicated issues
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask to meet deadlines
  • Fundamental understanding of Db2 LUW
  • Fundamental understanding of Oracle or SQL Server platforms
  • Fundamental understanding of Windows OS, Linux and AIX
  • Fundamental understanding of scripting in Bash
  • Fundamental understanding of backup and recovery procedures
  • Fundamental understanding of database security and best practices
  • Fundamental understanding of database design and best practices
  • Basic understanding of networking for troubleshooting purposes

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to manage and configure Azure cloud databases
  • Fundamental understanding of other Database Platforms such as Azure SQL, Cosmos DB and open source databases
  • Understanding of scripting in Python and other scripting languages
  • Experience working with large SQL Server databases
  • Experience in retail, warehouse and supply chain management software
  • Azure cloud database or database platform certifications
