The Database Administrator III is responsible for database availability, performance, replication, and backups within multiple database environments that operate 24/7/365. The DBA will monitor performance for both on-prem and Azure databases, providing process improvements based on KPIs and metrics created using industry best practices. The DBA will support release cycles that occur throughout the SDLC process and assist in cross-training junior DBAs. Essential functions include monitoring and analyzing space usage, system performance, and tuning/recommending query improvements while maintaining data integrity and availability. The DBA will provide Gap Analysis, Metrics, KPIs, Performance Dashboard, Configuration Management, and Documentation of systems. They will manage deployment packaging, testing, and implementation, collaborating with application and data development, data architecture, and other IT teams to ensure releases are delivered with repeatable and auditable processes. The DBA will also manage Change, Incident, Problem, and Service Management processes related to database activities and implementations, document, standardize, and automate deployment processes, and design/build tools and frameworks that support deploying and managing customer applications, including batch and real-time data processing. Additionally, the DBA will create/follow checklists, automation routines, and processes for system validation, maintain a constructive and positive team environment that promotes openness, information sharing, problem-solving, and support for common team goals. They will assist in reducing maintenance costs while meeting or exceeding business objectives, ensuring all database servers are backed up to meet Recovery Point Objectives, including Recovery Time Objectives and Disaster Recovery testing, and perform recovery exercises as needed. Compliance with Exeter's policies & procedures, safety, state and federal laws, regulations, and standards is also a critical aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • College Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or a related field of study or equivalent work experience.
  • Five to Seven (5-7) years of related experience in SQL Server Database Administration.
  • Proficient knowledge and use of SQL Server 2016 through 2019 and Azure SQL database and Azure Synapse.
  • Proficient knowledge of SQL Server environment administration, deployment automation techniques, release management, server virtualization, storage snapshots and cloning, environment refresh/synchronization techniques, and data masking/scrubbing/tokenization.
  • Able to troubleshoot database performance and service outages related to all database touch points, database objects, storage, and connections.
  • Basic analytical skills and the ability to solve problems in an efficient, maintainable, and flexible way.
  • Proficient knowledge of SQL Server, T-SQL, Stored Procedures, Triggers, Views, Execution Plans, SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), and SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
  • Experienced in release management, troubleshooting, and supporting SQL Server environments, Availability Groups, Database Objects, and Replication.
  • Able to document best practices for queries, configurations, databases, connections, and security.
  • Working knowledge in tools utilized for Change, Incident, and Problem Management using ITIL framework.
  • Implemented, administered, migrated, and maintained SQL Servers in Windows, VM, and Azure Platforms.
  • Able to develop scripts using PowerShell, CommandShell, or other code to automate Standard SQL Server builds, monitoring, inventory, or open-source automation tools (OctoDeploy, Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Jenkins, etc.) to automate Standard SQL Server builds, monitoring, inventory, and research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with leadership, peers, and customers.
  • Self-motivated with strong team, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Exhibit desire to learn technologies and continue career growth.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required by business priorities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Azure: Synapse, SQL Database, Managed Instance, DevOps.
  • Familiarity with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Visual Studio, Azure Data Studio.
  • Experience with orchestration tools like ActiveBatch or other enterprise scheduling tools.
  • Knowledge of database monitoring tools such as Sentry One.
  • Experience with Always On Availability Groups or other High Availability and Clustering solutions.
  • Familiarity with ETL tools like SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Azure Data Factory.
  • Experience with reporting tools such as SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and Power BI.
