The University of Chicago Biological Sciences Division (BSD) is seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) to join its Information Technology team. The DBA will play a crucial role in the implementation, configuration, maintenance, and performance of SQL Server and Oracle RDBMS systems. This position is essential for ensuring the availability and consistent performance of applications that support clinical, translational, and basic science research. The successful candidate will possess solid technical skills complemented by excellent interpersonal and communication abilities, enabling them to work effectively within a collaborative environment. In this role, the DBA will be responsible for the operational readiness of database instances, which includes managing security, health, and performance. The DBA will execute data loads, deploy application code, and manage SQL Server databases across multiple product lifecycle environments, from development to production systems. Additionally, the DBA will manage Oracle database instances on Linux, configure and maintain database servers, and monitor system health and performance to ensure high levels of performance, availability, and security. The DBA will also analyze, solve, and correct issues in real-time, providing end-to-end problem resolution. They will refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes. Assisting developers with query tuning and schema refinement will be part of the responsibilities, as well as installing and configuring SSRS reporting instances. The DBA will define and interpret existing data, populate the database with new data from external sources, and participate in the development of queries and retrieval systems. Monitoring the database storage system to securely store and organize datasets is also a key responsibility. The DBA will perform other related work as needed to support the department's mission.
