About the position

Genesis10 is currently seeking a Database Administrator - Senior for a one year contract working onsite with an insurance company in Franklin, WI. As a DB2 LUW Database Systems Engineer, you will engineer and support database systems including analysis, planning, design, development, implementation, and upgrades. By following established architectural and engineering best practices, you will take charge of complex systems to achieve strategic objectives in the areas of solving for client needs, infrastructure availability, and automation, with a strong focus on database environment security. This role involves designing system solutions, implementing new features, resolving complex incidents and problems, enhancing infrastructure monitoring and alerts, and consulting with application support and development staff. You will be expected to work within an agile framework, defining and planning work on a team backlog and determining ways for the team to be successful in meeting its outcomes. Your responsibilities will include driving innovation for system improvements, determining architectural and design best practices, finding automation opportunities, and guiding the proper use of new features and functionality. You will also have the opportunity to learn and work with other database technologies and automation practices based on additional architectural design and engineering opportunities. This position requires a strong technical aptitude, the ability to logically analyze and creatively solve complex issues independently, and effective communication skills to interact with multiple levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and support database systems including analysis, planning, design, development, implementation, and upgrades.
  • Design system solutions and implement new features.
  • Resolve complex incidents and problems, enhancing infrastructure monitoring and alerts.
  • Consult with application support and development staff.
  • Drive innovation for system improvements and determine architectural and design best practices.
  • Find automation opportunities and guide proper use of new features and functionality.
  • Write and maintain complex Unix shell and Python scripts for maintenance, automation, and testing.
  • Design, implement, and maintain Business Continuity Plan (BCP) and provide support for BCP exercises and actual disaster recovery.
  • Partner with product team to analyze business requirements and functional specifications to design and build data solutions.
  • Maintain development best practices to optimize maintainability and supportability of systems through all environments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in DB2-LUW database administration.
  • Highly proficient with AIX/Linux operating systems.
  • Highly skilled with all aspects of DB2-LUW including HADR and TSA tiebreaker scenarios and design options.
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to logically analyze and creatively solve complex issues independently.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to multiple levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work well with teams not centrally located.
  • Ability to be self-directed and collaborative in ambiguous situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with all levels throughout the enterprise.
  • Strong sense of ownership and the ability to work with limited set of requirements.
  • Ability and desire to train/mentor other team members.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working within Atlassian's Jira software for agile based feature and story creation and execution.
  • Experience with AWS or other cloud environments including technologies such as Redshift and Elasticache and Databricks.
  • Experience with using Terraform to create new or modify existing AWS cloud-based clusters and nodes.
