About the position

The Database Administrator at Motorola Solutions plays a crucial role in ensuring the security, stability, and performance of the company's Production and Development environment databases. This position is integral to the Technical Operations team for the Rave Product Lines, which is dedicated to fulfilling Motorola Solutions' mission of keeping people connected and safe. The Database Administrator will be responsible for configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining databases in a consistent manner, collaborating closely with Development teams to enhance the design and performance of MySQL schemas. The role requires a proactive approach to monitoring and planning, ensuring that the MySQL platform remains stable and meets service level agreements (SLAs). In addition to maintenance tasks such as backups, restores, clustering, and replication, the Database Administrator will evaluate, test, and deploy new releases, patches, and upgrades of the MySQL Server Platform. Performance tuning and optimization are key responsibilities, utilizing both third-party and native monitoring tools to enhance database performance. The role also involves implementing security measures, including encryption and maintaining server permissions, as well as creating and maintaining documentation related to server configurations and design decisions. The Database Administrator will participate in an on-call rotation to support the Database Platform, manage off-hours maintenance activities, and respond to critical alerts. Responsibilities

  • Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain the company's Production and Development environment databases.
  • Work with Development to improve the design and performance of MySQL schemas.
  • Own, track, and resolve all database-related incidents and configuration requests to meet SLA targets.
  • Perform MySQL Server maintenance including backups, restores, clustering, and replication.
  • Evaluate, test, and deploy new releases, patches, and upgrades of the MySQL Server Platform.
  • Proactively monitor MySQL platform to ensure stability and uptime against SLA.
  • Implement improvements to database performance and capacity monitoring.
  • Conduct performance tuning and optimization using monitoring/troubleshooting tools.
  • Create and manage indexes and provide schema improvement recommendations.
  • Deploy table, field, and database encryption per best practices.
  • Maintain the server permissions model and monitor exceptions.
  • Create and maintain documentation including annotated schema layouts and server configuration details.
  • Participate in on-call rotation in support of Database Platform.
  • Manage off-hours maintenance activities as scheduled.
  • Respond to critical alerts and manage data for reporting and performance adjustments.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience as a database administrator, with at least 2 years focused on MySQL 5+ on Linux.
  • Extensive knowledge of database systems with a focus on MySQL.
  • Energetic self-starter comfortable in a team-oriented environment.
  • Familiarity with common tools and techniques for database management.
