About the position

As a Database Administrator at American Greetings, you will play a crucial role in managing and administering databases within our Creative Studios located in Westlake, Ohio. This hybrid position requires candidates to be based in northeast Ohio. You will be responsible for providing tier 1, 2, and 3 support for all database management tasks. Your expertise in database architecture, logical and physical design, automation, documentation, and performance tuning will be essential in ensuring the smooth operation of our database systems. In this role, you will conduct database backups, design, development, testing, and performance tuning. You will also be tasked with conducting after-action analyses to identify and prevent future issues, debugging performance problems, and documenting your findings. As a subject matter expert, you will be expected to identify the impacts of proposed changes, create task estimates, and deliver results efficiently without requiring rework from other engineers. Your ability to learn and apply new knowledge will be vital in achieving departmental goals. You will maintain database access control and privileges, perform capacity planning, and plan for disaster recovery scenarios. Your advanced understanding of schema and metadata architecture will be critical as you work with various business units. Additionally, you will provide 24/7 support for both planned and unplanned activities to minimize disruptions to the business. This position requires a strong foundation in SQL and familiarity with database replication and high availability concepts, as well as basic Linux commands and networking tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for database backups, design, development, testing, and performance tuning.
  • Conduct after-action analyses when issues arise and plan to prevent future occurrences.
  • Debug database performance problems and document results and findings.
  • Serve as a team-wide subject matter expert on database management.
  • Identify impacts of proposed changes and create task estimates.
  • Complete tasks within expected timeframes and deliver results without rework.
  • Learn new technologies and apply that knowledge to achieve goals.
  • Maintain underlying storage systems (SAN, NAS, NFS) and database interactions.
  • Audit databases for access and security using built-in software or external tools.
  • Maintain database access control and privileges.
  • Perform capacity planning for space and performance.
  • Plan for disaster recovery scenarios and advanced backup/recovery processes.
  • Migrate data among databases and to external sources.
  • Enforce database integrity through triggers, RI, and constraints.
  • Write basic stored procedures, functions, and triggers.
  • Understand patching requirements and maintain a patch schedule.
  • Champion process, documentation, and operational improvements.
  • Provide 24/7 support for planned and unplanned activities.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a large, enterprise client-server environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact professionally with diverse clients and staff.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work productively in teams and learn new technical skills quickly.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to resolve technical problems independently.
  • Familiarity with backups, disaster recovery, and restoration systems.
