About the position

The Database Administrator will be a key member of the Database Services team at UCSF, responsible for supporting and maintaining databases to enhance the customer experience and provide value across various departments. This role involves schema definition, data security, and operational guidelines, while also ensuring the integrity and security of the University's data. The Database Administrator will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to deliver exceptional database services and will act as the first line of defense in diagnosing and resolving database issues.

Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain databases, including schema definition and structure.
  • Facilitate the development of documentation, data security measures, and operational guidelines.
  • Design, create, optimize, and maintain IT databases.
  • Profile application workloads and identify application and infrastructure interdependencies.
  • Implement and maintain stringent security protocols to protect University data.
  • Diagnose and resolve database issues to ensure minimal disruption to operations.
  • Collaborate with academic, medical, and research organizations to provide database services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, or related fields.
  • 1 to 3+ years of experience in information technology, database architecture, or software development.
  • Experience in data modeling and SQL optimization.
  • Prior experience with database technologies such as Oracle, SQL, MySQL, or Postgres SQL.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix and Windows system administration.
  • Strong skills in PowerShell and/or Unix shell scripting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and ability to triage issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience creating high-volume databases for enterprise-grade solutions.
  • Knowledge of virtualization techniques for scalable SaaS offerings.
  • Ability to interpret and apply service level agreements and policies.
  • Expertise in database technologies including MongoDB and cloud database services.
