The Database Administrator (DBA) position is a critical role within our team, primarily focused on managing and transitioning our database environments from Sybase to SQL Server. The selected candidate will be expected to work approximately 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with two days required on-site in Lansing, MI. While minimal overtime may be necessary, it is generally rare and must be pre-approved by our customer. The DBA will be involved in a formal change control environment, ensuring that all changes are documented and executed according to established protocols. The current database environment is predominantly Sybase, specifically version 15.7, running on Solaris within an X86 hardware setup. We are in the process of migrating to a pure SQL Server environment over the next three years, which includes mixed versions of SQL Server on various Windows Server platforms, as well as Azure. The DBA will assist with the ongoing management of the Sybase environment while also supporting SQL Server tasks, particularly during after-hours implementations that require additional manpower to reduce the workload on senior DBAs. The role will also involve troubleshooting database issues, running and developing CRON jobs, and performing weekly data fixes. The DBA will be expected to work with clusters and participate in disaster recovery efforts across development, test, and production environments. A strong background in both Sybase and SQL Server is essential, particularly experience with migration processes, as this will be a key focus of the role. The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and ready to contribute to the success of our database management initiatives.
