About the position

The role of the Database Administrator with Enterprise Technology Services is to work at a high level to facilitate effective database services with a diverse group of technical and customer stakeholders toward optimal business goals. This position requires leading teams and working independently within a team to resolve project objectives and production support related to SQL databases and applications, often under critical time frames. The Database Administrator will manage medium and large-sized production database systems across multiple environments, including MS SQL Server 2017, 2019, and 2022 on Windows Servers, as well as Oracle databases on Windows and Linux Servers. In this role, the Database Administrator will independently provide decision-making support for best practice database administration. They will possess in-depth knowledge and experience in implementing High Availability Disaster Recovery solutions, including Log Shipping, Transactional Replication, Microsoft Windows Clustering, and SQL Always On Availability Groups. The position also involves analyzing and designing data-driven business solutions for agency customers, collaborating with technical team members and vendors to implement new software solutions per vendor specifications. The Database Administrator will create and implement capacity plans that encompass SAN storage, drive optimizations, CPU/memory management, and life-cycle management. They will develop and implement backup and recovery plans, schedule backups, monitor job statuses, and validate database restores, including conducting Disaster Recovery (DR) failover testing validation. Additionally, the role includes developing and maintaining technical standards and procedures, installing, configuring, patching, testing, and upgrading Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database software, and recommending solutions to vendor and county-built application issues and business problems.

Responsibilities

  • Administer Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle databases in medium and large-sized production and non-production systems across multiple environments including Windows, Linux, and UNIX Servers.
  • Provide independent decision making, troubleshooting, and problem solving in support of best practice database administration and promotion of business application efficiency and data security.
  • Develop, maintain, and adhere to standards and database administration procedures including best practices and maintaining database process flow and related support diagrams.
  • Install, configure, patch, tune, test, and upgrade SQL Server and/or Oracle software.
  • Analyze and design data-driven business solutions for agency customers.
  • Work with ETS Technical Team Members (and vendors), and customers to implement new software solutions.
  • Independently evaluate and resolve database issues including troubleshooting CPU, memory, I/O, and other issues as well as analyzing the underlying servers for problems.
  • Proactively conduct performance monitoring, tuning, and database optimizations.
  • Implement high availability disaster recovery solutions including Log Shipping, Transactional Replication, Microsoft Windows Clustering, SQL Always On Availability Groups.
  • Manage and troubleshoot database security, auditing, encryption, network segmentations, and firewall/appliance rules for all environments to ensure security and compliance.
  • Implement and support databases in Azure, AWS, OCI, or similar cloud infrastructure environments.
  • Install and manage Power BI Reporting Services (PBIRS), SQL Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Analysis Services (SSAS), and Integration Services (SSIS).
  • Install Oracle database software and architect related databases.
  • Create storage database structures with high-level security features.
  • Conduct performance tuning of the databases for optimal efficiency.
  • Maintain high availability production database environments using Oracle Data Guard.
  • May manage and mentor other DBA project team members as the DBA subject matter expert.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or higher in business analysis, information technology, software engineering, or related field (One year of relevant experience may be substituted for each year of required education).
  • Minimum two years prior experience in database fundamentals (configuring data access and auditing, back-up/restoration, monitoring, high availability/disaster recovery, storage, and daily managing of multiple database versions and related servers).
  • Broad understanding of software development, server administration, networking, and IT security.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Experience with interface development and deployment to/from multiple systems.
  • Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): SQL Database Administration / Oracle Database Administration Certification.
  • Three or more years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server and/or Oracle Database Administration experience.
