About the position

The Database Administrator will shape and support the City of Durango's database infrastructure, ensuring the resiliency and security of the City's databases. This role involves designing, installing, configuring, and migrating data, as well as monitoring performance and troubleshooting issues. The Database Administrator will also provide data analytical support and collaborate with the IT applications team, serving as the technical point of contact for database users and third-party support.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain backups, alerts, reports, database integrity checks, and automated jobs.
  • Perform backup recovery, clean up files, update stats, and review error logs.
  • Monitor, audit, optimize, troubleshoot, and establish baselines using Database Management System (DBMS) tools and applications.
  • Plan for DBMS configuration changes, system resources, and workloads.
  • Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and manage DBMS and associated databases.
  • Manage Structured Query Language (SQL) Server security, user accounts, permissions, and user tracking.
  • Document configurations, security, activities, maintenance, and operations.
  • Research, recommend, and implement new database applications and architectures.
  • Create or support creation of reports and analytics based on user needs.
  • Assist with building and maintaining a data warehouse system integrating data from distinct systems to support the City's Business Analyst.
  • Assist in developing departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to provide insights and data-driven results.
  • Plan and manage data migrations and system integrations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in management information systems, database administration, computer science, or a related field.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible experience in database systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of SQL Server, including management studio, licensing, and security; experience with backup procedures, performance optimization, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of .NET environment, web services, and XML open standard.
  • Familiarity with network architectures (Client/Server, Internet/Intranet, Enterprise), LAN/WAN telecommunications, and system security principles.
  • Ability to analyze data, solve complex problems, and develop logical solutions for computer applications and programming.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, including the ability to present technical information in a user-friendly way.
  • Ability to work effectively with others, collaborate with the IT team, and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, adapt to changing procedures, and participate in on-call rotations for emergency support.
