About the position

Amentum is seeking a Database Administrator for a position on Kauai, HI, supporting the IT Department. The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for managing and maintaining databases, ensuring that data is accurate and secure from breaches. This role involves performing database capacity planning, configuration, performance monitoring, security measures, troubleshooting, as well as backup and data recovery. The DBA will provide administrative support for various database systems, including Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server, and will participate in Information Assurance compliance procedures and controls for application software and systems. The DBA will establish an overall vision and direction for improving database administrative and security operations. Responsibilities include database system administration and configuration, workflow development, and administration, along with a significant role in end-user support. The DBA will ensure the overall performance, reliability, and security of data, databases, and related applications. This includes managing database structures by monitoring performance and adjusting internal structures as required, developing and implementing backup and recovery strategies to protect critical data, and performing regular backups and testing recovery procedures to minimize the risk of data loss. Additionally, the DBA will be involved in the implementation of Department of Defense cybersecurity requirements, including IAVM and SRG/STIG requirements. The role requires planning, designing, creating, installing, customizing, upgrading, and maintaining databases to meet government and contractor-defined requirements. The DBA will assist with production incidents and resolutions, including root cause analysis and recommendations, and will collaborate with other teams, including system administrators and network engineers, to ensure seamless integration and efficient database operations. Documentation of databases, procedures, and deployed applications is also a key responsibility, along with providing training for new users or new application products. The candidate must be capable of working in a team environment and participate in technical activities throughout the project life cycle, maintaining close technical involvement with all contributing organizations. Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills are required.

Responsibilities

  • Establish overall vision and direction for improving database administrative and security operations.
  • Database system administration and configuration; workflow development and administration along with a major role in end-user support.
  • Ensure overall performance, reliability, and security of data, databases, and related applications.
  • Manage database structures by monitoring performance and adjusting the internal structures (tuning) as required.
  • Develop and implement backup and recovery strategies to protect critical data and ensure data integrity.
  • Perform regular backups and test recovery procedures to minimize the risk of data loss.
  • Implement Department of Defense cyber security regarding IAVM and SRG/STIG requirements.
  • Involvement in planning, designing, creating, installing, customization, upgrades, and maintenance of databases to meet government and contractor defined requirements.
  • Assist with production incidents and resolutions, including root cause analysis and recommendations.

  • Implement/maintain database reporting and continuous improvement.
  • Document databases, procedures, and deployed applications.
  • Support other database products as necessary.
  • Provide training for new users or for new application products.
  • Perform other duties as required including property custodian.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in Computer Science or similar discipline is required. Five years of directly related IT experience may be substituted.
  • Three+ years as a Database Administrator.
  • Deep understanding of one or more DBMS platforms such as Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB. Proficient in installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of these systems.
  • Strong skills in database design and data modeling, including creating efficient database schemas and ensuring data integrity.
  • Well-versed in SQL to perform tasks like querying, updating, and managing databases. Expert in writing complex SQL queries and optimizing SQL code.
  • Proficient in monitoring and optimizing database performance.
  • Solid understanding of backup and recovery strategies to ensure the availability and integrity of data.
  • Expert in database security to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with regulations.
