About the position

GDC IT Solutions is currently seeking a Database Administrator based in the Harrisburg, PA area. This role is hybrid and will require 1 day onsite per week. As a Database Administrator, you will be responsible for providing technical support for Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases, managing the full system life cycle, and supporting multiple database technologies. You will work as part of a team of Database Administrators to ensure the performance, reliability, and availability of databases, while collaborating with both internal teams and third-party vendors.

Responsibilities

• Maintain existing databases, including investigating factors such as storage requirements, access time, and performance issues.
• Perform moderately complex database design tasks, including logical and physical data modeling.
• Manage database structure, backup/recovery, data replication, and performance monitoring/tuning.
• Research and implement new technologies, skills, and methods for proactive database management.
• Install and upgrade database software to enhance performance.
• Monitor database activity, troubleshoot issues, and provide solutions or workarounds.
• Implement database monitoring procedures to maximize availability and performance.
• Collaborate with agency staff, third-party vendors, and infrastructure teams on database installation, sizing, and support.
• Lead and participate in database configurations, changes, and upgrades for moderately complex projects.
• Ensure that databases are developed and implemented according to published standards.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, and 2-5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Working knowledge of database concepts and hands-on experience with a Database Management System (DBMS).
• Competence in debugging and problem-solving to identify root causes and recommend solutions.
• Intermediate experience in physical data modeling, database design principles, and programming.
• Strong ability to analyze complex information and draw conclusions.
• Proven ability to learn and support new technologies, hardware, and operating systems.
• Effective communication skills to explain complex technical subjects to non-technical stakeholders.
• Knowledge of data strategy development and associated policies.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work across multiple responsibilities.

Nice-to-haves
