About the position

We are seeking a skilled Database Administrator for a 6-month contract opportunity based in Pittsburgh, PA/Plano, TX, with options for onsite or hybrid work. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in database design, development, and administration, with at least 5 years of relevant experience. This role requires advanced knowledge of SQL Server, TSQL, and SSIS, along with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high productivity levels. The Database Administrator will be responsible for analyzing and resolving database-related issues, developing and implementing data extraction and transformation processes, and ensuring optimal database performance through tuning and maintenance. Additionally, the role involves creating and managing databases, tables, and other database objects, as well as providing after-hours support when necessary. The successful candidate will work collaboratively in an Agile environment, adhering to Scrum principles, and will be expected to coach and mentor other team members on database best practices. This position also requires a proactive approach to risk management, particularly concerning information security risks.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and evaluate reported problems, take responsibility for resolution, and prevent recurrence.
  • Develop, test, implement, troubleshoot, and support data extraction, transformation, and loading processes.
  • Maintain database performance by calculating optimum values for database parameters; implement new releases; complete maintenance requirements.
  • Proactively manage Database Performance Tuning and Optimization.
  • Develop and implement database business continuity plans and procedures.
  • Create new databases, tables, views, indexes, scheduled jobs, triggers, logins, etc. based on system specifications.
  • Tune data warehouse and other database systems for optimal performance and reliability.
  • Perform index and statistics maintenance.
  • Develop, implement, administer, and maintain operational automation scripting.
  • Maintain technical documentation related to the database systems and processes.
  • Provide after-hours and weekend escalation support as required.
  • Coach, train, and mentor other employees on proper access and use of database systems.
  • Adhere to Scrum principles and philosophies in fulfillment of the role.
  • Work as a cross-functional team member in an Agile setting to help complete and deliver the team commitments.
  • Collaborate across teams and across business areas in the spirit of an Agile mindset.
  • Report risks that are identified to the appropriate team and/or management, and manage, monitor, and report risks within the scope of your work area.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science/Computer Information Systems or equivalent training and/or experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in database design, development, and general administration.
  • Advanced knowledge of SSIS, TSQL, and MS SQL Server.
  • Ability to write fully optimized SQL for various scripts and stored procedures.
  • Fundamental software development methodologies, design, and implementation.
  • Advanced knowledge of database backup concepts, query optimization, data security, and availability groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Team player with positive interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated and independent thinker.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with other database platforms such as MySQL and NoSQL technologies.
  • Experience with SSRS, C#, and Powershell.
