About the position

The Database Administrator at Dillard University is responsible for designing, writing, and maintaining the university's SQL database system to ensure that the right information is accessible to the right individuals at the right time. This role involves a variety of essential duties and responsibilities, including maintaining the Microsoft SQL database software, managing database design and development, and implementing effective ways to store and organize data. The Database Administrator will also be tasked with ensuring the integrity of the SQL database, managing database access, and designing maintenance procedures that are put into operation. In addition to these responsibilities, the Database Administrator will ensure that databases meet user requirements and manage database security and integrity through backup and restore procedures. The role requires building and maintaining SQL scripts on Microsoft SQL Server, implementing security measures, and defining objectives through consultation with staff at all levels. The Database Administrator will also be responsible for writing reports, documentation, and operating manuals, as well as testing and modifying databases to ensure reliable operation. User training, support, and feedback are also key components of this position, along with writing disaster recovery plans and archiving data. The ideal candidate will possess excellent decision-making and multi-tasking skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical individuals. The Database Administrator will also be responsible for installing and testing software upgrades and responding to Helpdesk tickets in a timely manner. This position includes supervisory responsibilities, overseeing two employees: a Helpdesk Technician and a Desktop Support staff member.

Responsibilities

  • Design, write, and maintain the university SQL database system.
  • Maintain the Microsoft SQL database software to manage, implement, and create storage solutions.
  • Keep the database up to date and manage database design and development.
  • Manage database access and design maintenance procedures.
  • Ensure databases meet user requirements and manage database security/integrity through backup and restore procedures.
  • Build and maintain SQL scripts on Microsoft SQL Server and implement security measures.
  • Define objectives through consultation with staff at all levels.
  • Write reports, documentation, and operating manuals.
  • Test and modify databases to ensure reliable operation.
  • Provide user training, support, and feedback.
  • Write disaster recovery plans and archive data.
  • Install and test software upgrades and respond to Helpdesk tickets in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Several years of SQL/Database implementation, programming, and writing of scripts experience.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server 2016 and above.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Active Directory and IIS (Microsoft Web Server).
  • Knowledge and understanding of VMWare.
  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.

Nice-to-haves
