About the position

The Database Analyst will play a crucial role in the development, execution, and continuous improvement of the department's database and related educational platforms. This position involves analyzing database needs and proposing effective software solutions. The Database Analyst will be responsible for the design, creation, maintenance, and backup of databases and applications, including data entry systems. The role requires a proactive approach to ensure that the databases operate efficiently and meet the needs of the department. In this position, the Database Analyst will be tasked with all aspects of database development strategy, including generation and dissemination of data. The analyst will design and develop in-house relational database applications and assist management in creating database applications for various initiatives. This includes overseeing the data entry process as needed and integrating the database with the program web server. The analyst will also maintain database performance, evaluate its integrity, and correct any issues that arise. User support, training, and documentation for application development are also key responsibilities. The Database Analyst will actively track metrics and analyze demand, satisfaction, and outcomes associated with departmental database initiatives. This includes managing assigned databases and assisting with custom surveys. The role requires inputting data, updating records, and running reports in coordination with colleagues at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). Other duties may be assigned as necessary, making this a dynamic and engaging position.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all assigned database development strategy, generation and dissemination.
  • Designs and develops in-house relational database applications.
  • Assists management in designing database applications for initiatives and oversees the related data entry process as needed.
  • Assists in integrating the database with the program web server as needed.
  • Maintains database development, maintenance, performance evaluation and correction on databases ensuring proper operation, integrity and performance.
  • Assists in user support, training and documentation for applications development.
  • Actively tracks metrics and analyzes demand/satisfaction/outcomes associated with departmental database initiative; manages assigned databases and assists with custom surveys.
  • Inputs data, updates records, runs reports, in coordination with WUSTL colleagues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Business Administration or any other analytical/quantitative field with one to two years of experience in various databases.
  • Knowledge of software development languages, database and query languages.
  • Knowledge of office technology including word processing, spreadsheet and electronic communication.
  • Six or more years of experience in Data Analytics, Software Development or Finance.
  • Knowledge of relational databases and SQL; Database design, creation, manipulation and query.
  • Proven knowledge of statistical tests and linear regression.
  • Clear understanding of multi-tier Web application architecture.
  • Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages including but not limited to: Java, C/C++, C# or Python.
  • Knowledge of shell scripting and AWS platform.
  • Statistical tools such as Stata, R, SAS, SPSS.
  • Experience analyzing data and translating business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Experience in building scalable web applications / Strong web development skills, including Java, J2EE full stack (mainly Spring) with UI expertise.
  • Thorough knowledge of Hadoop, SQL, NOSQL, R and Python experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree preferably in the areas of Computer Science, Finance, Statistics or Related discipline.
  • Master's of Business Administration.
  • Knowledge of one or more of the following: machine learning, data mining, information retrieval, advanced statistics or natural language processing.
  • Self-starter with excellent project management, technical, communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated individual driven by challenge with the ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy and productivity.
  • Good professional judgment, initiative and confidence.
  • Ability to work independently but have the ability to function as part of a team, coordinating with multiple constituencies.
