About the position

The Database and Application Administrator at the University of Oregon is responsible for providing stable and robust data management and application services to the campus. This role involves collaborating with IT professionals to analyze, troubleshoot, integrate, and tune applications, focusing on the underlying databases and data structures. The position includes leading a team of database administrators to implement and maintain multi-tier applications and their databases, ensuring compliance with industry guidelines and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with IT professionals to provide data management and application services.
  • Lead a team of database administrators in implementing and maintaining multi-tier applications.
  • Upgrade, monitor, fix, configure, and back up database systems.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, integrate, and tune applications with a focus on databases.
  • Ensure technical solutions comply with industry guidelines and regulations.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation to provide essential services during emergencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related area, or equivalent training and experience.
  • Advanced Oracle and/or MySQL database administration skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a rapidly evolving technical environment.
  • Experience in creating, monitoring, upgrading, patching, backing up, and securing production-critical databases.
  • Proficiency in SQL in a moderate to complex environment.
  • Knowledge of protecting sensitive and private data.
  • Ability to install and configure software in a Linux or UNIX environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Three years of experience in a technical role focusing on database administration.
  • Experience administering Ellucian's Banner ERP application.
  • Experience with multi-tier applications that include clustered databases.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as PL/SQL, SQL, BASH, Java, Groovy, or C.
  • Experience with ITIL or ITSM.
