About the position

The Database Architect position at 9th Way Insignia is a critical role within the Heuristic Behavior Analytics (HBA) project, which is integral to the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) defensive security strategy. This position involves leading the deployment and operations of the HBA technical baseline, ensuring that all technical scopes are delivered within the defined budget, schedule, and quality requirements. The Database Architect will serve as the primary point of contact for the project, overseeing a phased and integrated approach to the implementation of the HBA solution. This includes tuning and operating the system to provide comprehensive visibility into data and traffic throughout the network, which is essential for identifying anomalies and defining normal behavior baselines. The ideal candidate will possess a solid background in systems architecture, cybersecurity, and risk management, with a strong passion for designing and implementing robust security measures. The role requires the ability to design, implement, test, and maintain the security and integrity of digital solutions against existing and potential threats, adhering to federal standards. The Database Architect will also be responsible for translating user needs into effective database designs, creating management processes, and maintaining detailed documentation to support the organization's information architecture. In this position, the Database Architect will collaborate closely with software developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of database systems with applications. The role also involves monitoring and optimizing database performance, implementing data security policies, ensuring compliance with industry regulations, and developing backup and recovery strategies to prevent data loss. Additionally, the Database Architect will participate in change management processes and contribute to the development of technical documentation, including development planning and software testing processes.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable and secure database solutions based on organizational requirements.
  • Evaluate and recommend database technologies and tools to meet business goals and objectives.
  • Develop and maintain data models to represent the organization's information architecture.
  • Ensure data integrity, consistency, and normalization across databases.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance to ensure optimal responsiveness and efficiency.
  • Identify and address bottlenecks, database tuning, and optimization opportunities.
  • Implement and enforce data security policies to safeguard sensitive information.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards related to data management.
  • Collaborate with software developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to integrate database systems with applications.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the development team on database-related issues.
  • Develop and maintain backup and recovery strategies to prevent data loss.
  • Develop, implement, and test disaster recovery procedures for databases.
  • Provide recommendations for improvements and alternative solutions as part of an analysis of alternatives (AOA).
  • Collaborate with team to generate technical documentation including development planning, technical architecture, software testing and deployment process.
  • Participate in the development and execution of Change Management and Release Management Plans.
  • Make internal and systematic changes to technical aspects as part of change management processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related scientific/technical discipline, with 8 years of additional relevant experience considered in lieu of Degree.
  • 5+ years of experience architecting enterprise-wide database solutions.
  • Prior experience in a federal data warehouse and understanding of government data management processes.
  • Strong knowledge of database security practices and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with database performance tuning and optimization techniques.
  • Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation and data models.
