About the position

The Database Architect (DBA) is responsible for the design, development, and administration of a healthcare-related common data model. This role involves defining, creating, and maintaining enterprise databases and structures, ensuring data integrity, recovery, and performance. The DBA will coordinate with various stakeholders to ensure effective data management and support business objectives while maintaining user trust in IT solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Create a long-term common data model for integration and interoperability between internal and external systems.
  • Research and recommend design criteria; publish standards and work with development staff; standardize environment and improve efficiency.
  • Create, develop, and review the physical model created from the logical model, ensuring compliance with standards and guidelines.
  • Produce entity relationship diagrams, data flow diagrams, and database normalization schemata.
  • Manage the implementation and use of the enterprise data dictionary.
  • Lead design reviews for database designs and application code; estimate sizes of new databases.
  • Develop rules, procedures, and standards for the access and maintenance of shared data resources.
  • Review overall physical database structures for data integrity, performance quality, and maintenance requirements.
  • Communicate complex technical information concisely and articulately.
  • Participate in technical strategy meetings regarding upgrades, capacity planning, and new application designs.
  • Evaluate and recommend DBA tools and new DBMS technologies.
  • Develop utilities for monitoring and evaluating data quality.
  • Assist in defining and developing database documentation and standards.
  • Conduct application transaction volume analysis and interpret impact on performance.
  • Design data infrastructure for data access and organization.
  • Monitor performance and implement solutions for optimization.
  • Maintain database backup/recovery environment and develop recovery procedures.
  • Reorganize database structures as needed and automate procedures.
  • Perform application refreshes on request and provide optimal development environments.
  • Monitor file system space and verify efficient use of disk storage.
  • Serve as business liaison to database vendors and facilitate problem resolution with application development staff.
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field; master's degree desirable.
  • Recent experience in design, administration, programming, and support of RDBMSs (e.g., Oracle, SQL Server, DB2).
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and optimizing a common data model.
  • Ability to work with customers of varying technical expertise in high-pressure situations.
  • Certification as a developer is highly desirable.
  • Experience with business-critical and high availability applications.
  • Thorough understanding of the common data model and relational database techniques.
  • Experience in designing, modeling, and supporting large RDBMS systems.
  • Extensive experience in logical and physical database design and data modeling techniques.
  • Proficiency in database normalization techniques and recovery techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL and programming in at least one 3GL/4GL/OO4GL language.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with electronic health record systems.
  • Knowledge of Web-enabled GUIs.
